베드로 수위권 교회는 부활하신 예수님이 갈릴리 호숫가에서 제자들에게 나타나 아침을 차려 주시고, 베드로에게 세 번 '네가 나를 사랑하느냐' 물으시며 '내 양을 먹이라' 하신 요한복음 21장의 전승지에 세워진 교회다. 4세기 말 이곳을 다녀간 순례자 에게리아의 기록에 이미 기념 장소가 언급될 만큼 오랜 전승지로, 현재의 검은 현무암 교회는 1933년 프란치스코회가 옛 교회 터 위에 세운 것이다. 내부 제단 앞에는 부활하신 주님이 떡과 생선을 차려 주신 식탁으로 기려 온 '그리스도의 식탁(멘사 크리스티)' 바위가 보존되어 있다. 밤새 그물질에 실패한 제자들에게 '그물을 배 오른편에 던지라' 하신 말씀, 백쉰세 마리의 큰 물고기, 숯불 위의 떡과 생선 등 요한복음 21장의 세부가 이 물가에서 하나하나 살아난다. 세 번 부인했던 제자가 숯불 앞에서 세 번의 사랑 고백으로 회복되어 사명을 받는 이 장면은, 실패한 이를 다시 부르시는 주님의 은혜를 보여주는 복음의 백미다. 개신교 순례자들은 교회 앞 호숫가 자갈밭에 내려가 그 아침의 숯불과 대화를 묵상하곤 한다. 물가에 서서 요한복음 21장을 소리 내어 읽는 시간을 꼭 가져보길 권한다.
Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter — Emek HaYarden Regional Council
The Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter marks the shore where the risen Jesus cooked breakfast for his disciples and restored Peter with the threefold question 'Do you love me?' (John 21). The site was already noted by the pilgrim Egeria in the late fourth century, and the present black basalt chapel was built by the Franciscans in 1933 over earlier church remains; inside, the rock called Mensa Christi — the Table of Christ — commemorates that morning meal. Every detail of John 21 comes alive on this beach: the net cast on the right side, the 153 great fish, the charcoal fire with bread and fish. The scene of a disciple who denied his Lord three times being recommissioned through three confessions of love is the gospel at its most tender; step down to the pebbled shore and read the chapter aloud beside the water.
