성묘교회

예수님의 십자가 처형지 골고다와 부활의 빈 무덤 전승지를 한 지붕 아래 아우르는 교회로, 326년 콘스탄티누스 대제가 어머니 헬레나의 예루살렘 방문을 계기로 세워 335년에 봉헌했다. 하드리아누스 황제가 이 자리에 세웠던 이교 신전을 걷어내자 바위 무덤이 드러났다고 전해지며, 실제로 이 일대가 1세기에는 성벽 밖의 채석장이자 무덤 지대였음이 고고학적으로 확인되어 학문적으로도 골고다의 가장 유력한 위치로 평가된다. 1009년 파티마조 칼리프 알하킴에 의해 파괴된 후 비잔틴과 십자군 시대에 재건된 현재 건물을 그리스 정교회, 로마 가톨릭, 아르메니아 교회 등 여섯 교파가 1852년 확정된 '현상 유지' 협약 아래 공동 관리하는데, 정면 창턱에 놓인 채 움직이지 못하는 '부동의 사다리'가 그 미묘한 균형의 상징이 되었다. 무덤을 덮은 에디쿨레는 2016-17년 아테네 공대 팀의 보수 때 수백 년 만에 무덤 침상이 잠시 열려 조사되기도 했다. 2층 갈보리 채플에는 골고다의 바위가 유리 아래 드러나 있고, 십자가가 섰던 자리로 전해지는 지점에 손을 넣어 볼 수 있다. 향과 촛불과 순례자의 물결이 낯설 수 있으나, 개신교 순례자는 그 모든 장식 너머에서 '그리스도께서 성경대로 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 사흘 만에 다시 살아나셨다'(고전 15:3-4)는 복음의 핵심 사실 자체를 마주하게 된다. 비교적 한산한 이른 아침의 참배를 권한다.
Church of the Holy Sepulchre — Jerusalem
Built under Constantine from 326 after his mother Helena's visit and dedicated in 335, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre encloses both Golgotha and the tomb of the resurrection under one roof. Archaeology confirms the area was a quarry and burial ground outside the first-century walls, making this the most probable site of the crucifixion. Destroyed by the caliph al-Hakim in 1009 and rebuilt in Byzantine and Crusader times, it is shared by six Christian communities under the Status Quo of 1852 — symbolized by the famous immovable ladder on its facade — and the Edicule over the tomb was restored in 2016-17, when the burial bed was briefly uncovered for the first time in centuries. Upstairs the rock of Calvary shows through glass. Beneath the lamps and incense the Protestant pilgrim meets the bedrock facts of the gospel: Christ died for our sins and was raised on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Come early in the morning for a quieter visit.
