항가로아 성십자가 성당

태평양 한가운데 라파누이(이스터섬) 항가로아의 이 성당은 세계적으로도 드문 문화 융합의 상징이다. 본당은 1937년 12월 설립되었고, 초대 신부는 라파누이 문화를 수십 년간 연구한 독일 출신 선교사 세바스티안 엥글레르트였다. 정면 상인방에는 모세의 십계명 판과 천국의 열쇠 등 그리스도교 상징이, 이를 떠받치는 기둥에는 물고기와 새인간(탕가타 마누), 신성한 새 마누타라, 롱고롱고 문자 등 라파누이 고유의 상징이 나란히 새겨져 있다. 주제대 옆의 '라파누이의 성모'(1970)는 섬에서 만들어진 최초의 그리스도교 성상으로, 모아이를 닮은 형상에 마누타라 실루엣의 조개껍질 관과 흑요석 눈을 지녔다. 평신도 수사 외젠 에로는 1864년 이 섬에 정착한 최초의 서양인으로, 1866년 이폴리트 루셀 신부와 함께 돌아온 뒤 주민 대부분이 그리스도교로 개종했다. 에로는 1868년 결핵으로 숨져 이 성당에 묻혔다. 그러나 이 신앙의 이야기 이전에는 어두운 역사가 있다. 1862~63년 페루 노예 상인들의 습격으로 섬 인구의 3분의 1에서 절반가량이 끌려갔고, 이후 전염병이 이어지며 1877년 인구는 111명까지 줄었다. 선교사들 또한 새인간 의식 같은 전통을 적극적으로 억눌렀다. 이 복잡한 역사를 정직하게 마주할 때, 성당 조각에 새겨진 두 전통의 만남이 더 깊이 다가온다.

In Hanga Roa on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), in the middle of the Pacific, this church stands as a rare symbol of cultural fusion. The parish was founded in December 1937, its first priest the German-born missionary Fr. Sebastián Englert, who spent decades studying Rapa Nui culture. The facade's horizontal beam carries Christian symbols — the Tablets of Moses, the keys of paradise — while the columns beneath carry Rapa Nui symbols side by side: fish, the birdman figure Tangata Manu, the sacred manutara tern, and Rongorongo script. Beside the main altar, 'Our Lady of Rapa Nui' (1970) is considered the first Christian image made on the island: a moai-styled figure with a shell crown topped by a manutara silhouette and obsidian eyes. Lay brother Eugène Eyraud, the first Westerner to settle on the island, arrived in 1864; after he returned in 1866 with Fr. Hippolyte Roussel, most of the population converted. Eyraud died of tuberculosis in 1868 and is buried here. But before this story of faith lies a darker history: Peruvian slave raids in 1862-63 abducted roughly a third to half of the island's population, and epidemics that followed reduced it to as few as 111 people by 1877. Missionaries also actively suppressed traditions like the birdman ritual. Facing this complicated history honestly makes the meeting of two traditions carved into this church resonate more deeply.

✝ PILGRIM'S REFLECTIONOn an island whose population once fell to as few as 111, I look at a church where birdman and moai carvings stand beneath the cross. As Genesis 1:31 says, 'God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good' — surely God embraced even the Rapa Nui people's language and carving in his own image. But part of worshipping here is also refusing to forget the slave raids and epidemics that preceded that meeting.
