채찍질 교회

프란치스코회가 관리하는 이 작은 성당은 비아 돌로로사 제2처, 곧 예수께서 채찍질당하신 자리를 기념합니다(요한복음 19장 1절). 지금의 건물은 십자군 시대 예배당 터 위에 1928년부터 1929년 사이에 이탈리아 건축가 안토니오 바를루치가 다시 세운 것으로, 정갈한 로마네스크 양식이 돋보입니다. 안으로 들어서면 돔 천장을 가득 채운 황금빛 가시관 모자이크가 시선을 사로잡고, 세 개의 스테인드글라스 창이 수난의 세 장면을 담아냅니다. 하나는 예수께서 기둥에 묶여 채찍질당하시는 장면, 하나는 책임을 회피하며 손을 씻는 빌라도, 하나는 예수 대신 풀려나 기뻐하는 바라바입니다. 이 세 창의 배치는 무죄한 분이 죄인을 대신해 형벌을 받으신 복음의 핵심을 눈으로 묵상하게 합니다. 성당 경내에는 스투디움 비블리쿰 프란치스카눔 부속 고고학 박물관이 함께 있어 성지 곳곳에서 발굴된 유물과 연구 성과를 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 다만 이 지점이 실제 채찍질 장소인지는 성경이 특정하지 않으므로 오랜 전승으로 이해하는 것이 정직합니다. 방문 팁: 비아 돌로로사를 걷기 전 이곳에서 대속의 의미를 먼저 마음에 새겨 보십시오.
Church of the Flagellation — Jerusalem
Cared for by the Franciscans, this small church marks the Second Station of the Via Dolorosa, where Jesus was scourged (John 19:1). The present building, on the ruins of a Crusader chapel, was rebuilt by architect Antonio Barluzzi in 1928-1929. Inside, a golden mosaic of the crown of thorns fills the dome, and three stained-glass windows portray the Passion: the scourging of Jesus, Pilate washing his hands, and the release of Barabbas. Together they invite meditation on the gospel heart, that the innocent One bore punishment for the guilty. The compound also houses the archaeological museum of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Since Scripture does not fix this exact spot, it is honest to receive it as tradition.
