Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross — Jerusalem
Standing right beside the Church of the Flagellation, this Franciscan church commemorates where Jesus was condemned and took up the cross, built in the early twentieth century over Byzantine and Crusader remains. Beneath its white dome, rows of columns give a plain yet dignified feel, and a section of ancient pavement is exposed in the floor, reminding visitors they stand on layers of history. It shares one compound with the Flagellation church, together forming the starting complex of the Via Dolorosa. Pilgrims often begin their prayers here before walking toward Golgotha.
