나바레테 아순시온 성당

Church of the Assumption — La Rioja
Navarrete is a small town on the vineyard hills of La Rioja, crowned by the Renaissance church of the Assumption. Despite its plain exterior, stepping inside reveals a huge gilded Baroque altarpiece covering the whole wall, boasting some of the finest splendor in La Rioja. Tiers of carved saints and biblical scenes glitter in candlelight and hold the pilgrim's gaze. At the town's entrance survive remains of the medieval pilgrim hospital of San Juan de Acre, showing that even this small town was part of a dense network of care for the weary. With a splendid altar and a humble hospital ruin side by side, the town teaches that worship and service are one. A Protestant visitor can meditate before the grand altar on reverence for God, and before the hospital ruin on service to neighbor. True faith does not divide worship above from charity below. Tip: the hilltop climb is steep, so walk slowly, and do not miss the old gate carving from the hospital.
