베드로 통곡 교회

시온산 동쪽 사면에 자리한 이 교회의 이름 갈리칸투는 라틴어로 '닭이 울 때'라는 뜻으로, 예수님이 잡히시던 밤 베드로가 세 번이나 주님을 부인한 사건(막 14:66-72)을 기념한다. '닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라'는 예수님의 예고 그대로였다. 베드로는 뜰 불가에서 세 번이나 주님을 모른다 했고, 닭이 울자 통곡하며 무너졌다. 지금의 교회는 1931년에 세워졌지만, 그 아래에는 비잔틴 시대를 비롯한 옛 예배터가 겹겹이 남아 있고, 황금빛 지붕 위에 세운 큰 십자가는 예루살렘 남쪽 어디서나 눈에 들어온다. 이곳은 4세기부터 예수님을 심문한 대제사장 가야바의 집터로 전해져 왔으며, 지하 암굴에는 경비병이 죄수를 다루던 방과 사람을 밧줄로 매달아 가두던 구덩이가 남아 있어, 예수님이 심문받으시던 밤 이곳에 갇히셨을 가능성이 제기된다. 교회 옆으로는 제2성전기의 고대 계단이 드러나 있는데, 예수님이 겟세마네에서 잡히신 뒤 심문받으러 끌려가며 실제로 밟으셨을 법한 계단이다. 돌계단에 서서 그 밤 홀로 끌려가시던 주님의 발걸음을 상상하면 마음이 숙연해진다. 개신교 순례자에게 이곳은 베드로의 부인과 통회, 그리고 회복의 이야기가 서린 자리로 깊은 감정적 울림을 준다.
Church of St Peter in Gallicantu — Jerusalem
On the eastern slope of Mount Zion, this church's name, Gallicantu, is Latin for 'cockcrow,' commemorating Peter's threefold denial of the Lord on the night of the arrest (Mark 14:66-72) — just as Jesus had foretold, 'before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.' The present church was built in 1931 over layers of older worship sites, including Byzantine ones. Since the 4th century the place has been held to be the house of Caiaphas, and its underground caves preserve a guard room and a pit where prisoners were lowered by rope — raising the possibility that Jesus was held here during his questioning. Beside the church, exposed Second Temple stairs are steps Jesus may well have trodden as he was led from Gethsemane to trial. For Protestant pilgrims it resonates deeply with Peter's denial, sorrow, and restoration.
