Church of Santo Tomé (El Greco's 'Burial of Count Orgaz') — Castile-La Mancha (Toledo)
A modest Mudéjar church that holds El Greco's masterpiece, 'The Burial of Count Orgaz.' With its 14th-century tower, this small church is visited almost as a pilgrimage to a single painting. Made in 1586-88, the work divides the canvas into earth and heaven: below, saints lay the count to rest; above, Christ, the Virgin, and angels receive him in glory. Overlaying death and resurrection, the pilgrim life on earth and the heavenly home, it stands the viewer before their own end and eternity. Many faces are those of Toledans of the day. For Protestants, apart from doctrines of the saints, it conveys a weighty hope beyond death. Tip: admission centers on the painting, so arrive early and compare the upper and lower halves slowly.
