비야프랑카 델 비에르소 산티아고 성당(용서의 문)

비야프랑카 델 비에르소의 산티아고 성당은 1186년에 세워진 전이기 로마네스크 양식으로, 사도 야고보에게 봉헌되었다. 야고보는 헤롯 왕에게 칼로 죽임을 당해 사도 가운데 처음으로 순교한 인물이다(행 12:2). 이 성당은 북쪽의 '용서의 문(Puerta del Perdón)'으로 특히 유명하다. 전승에 따르면 약 1122년경 교황이, 병들거나 쇠약해 산티아고 데 콤포스텔라까지 끝내 걸어갈 수 없는 순례자가 성년(聖年, Año Jacobeo)에 이 문을 지나면 산티아고에 도달한 것과 같은 대사(大赦)를 받게 하는 특권을 이 성당에 부여했다고 전한다(전통). 그래서 이 문은 산티아고를 약 190km 앞둔 이곳에서, 완주하지 못하는 이에게 베풀어진 자비의 상징이 되었다. 문은 성년에만 열린다. 개신교 순례자에게 이 문은 구원이 인간의 완주라는 공로가 아니라 하나님의 은혜로 주어짐을 아름답게 예표한다 — 끝까지 이르지 못한 연약한 자에게도 문은 열린다. 방문 팁: 용서의 문은 성년(산티아고 축일 7월 25일이 주일인 해)에만 개방되니 방문 시기를 확인하라. 마을은 아름다운 광장과 강변 산책로로 유명하다.
Church of Santiago (Puerta del Perdón) — El Bierzo
The church of Santiago in Villafranca del Bierzo, built in 1186 in transitional Romanesque, is dedicated to St James the Apostle, the first apostle to be martyred, killed by the sword under Herod (Acts 12:2). It is famous for its north 'Gate of Forgiveness' (Puerta del Perdón). Tradition holds that around 1122 a pope granted this church the privilege that a pilgrim too sick or weak to reach Santiago de Compostela, passing through this gate in a Holy Year (Año Jacobeo), would receive the same indulgence as reaching Santiago (tradition). Some 190 km short of Santiago, the gate became a symbol of mercy for those who cannot finish. It opens only in a Holy Year. For Protestant pilgrims it beautifully foreshadows that salvation comes not by the merit of finishing but by God's grace: the door opens even for the weak who cannot go all the way. Tip: the gate opens only in Holy Years (when St James's feast, 25 July, falls on a Sunday); check timing. The town is loved for its lovely square and riverside walks.
