사리아 산타 마리냐 성당

사리아의 언덕 구시가에 있는 산타 마리냐 성당은 원래 로마네스크 성당이었으나 20세기에 크게 다시 지어졌다. 산뜻한 정면과 종탑을 지녔지만, 건축의 오래됨보다도 이 성당이 특별한 이유는 위치에 있다. 이곳에서 산티아고까지는 약 111km — '콤포스텔라' 완주 증서를 받기 위한 최소 도보 거리인 100km를 갓 넘긴다. 그래서 시간이 넉넉지 않거나 마지막 구간만 걷고자 하는 수많은 순례자가 바로 이 마을에서 길을 시작하며, 카미노 프랑세스에서 가장 붐비는 출발점이 되었다. 오랜 길을 걸어온 이들과 이제 막 첫발을 뗀 이들이 사리아에서 뒤섞이고, 성당 앞은 크레덴시알(순례자 여권)에 첫 도장을 받으려는 사람들로 활기가 넘친다. 마지막 100km의 상징적 시작점에 서서, 순례자는 완주를 향한 열망과 함께 '왜 나는 이 길을 걷는가'라는 초심을 다시 묻게 된다. 개신교 순례자에게는 늦은 시작조차 부끄러움이 아님을 되새기는 자리다 — 은혜는 걸어온 거리로 계산되지 않기 때문이다. 방문 팁: 성당 옆 돌계단(에스칼리나타 마요르)을 오르면 구시가로 이어지며, 아침 일찍 출발하면 붐비는 무리보다 앞설 수 있고, 성수기에는 숙소를 미리 예약하는 편이 좋다.

The Church of Santa Mariña sits in Sarria's hilltop old town; originally Romanesque, it was largely rebuilt in the 20th century. It has a tidy façade and bell tower, yet what makes it notable is less its age than its location. From here it is about 111km to Santiago — just past the 100km minimum on foot required for the 'Compostela' certificate. So countless pilgrims with limited time, or who wish to walk only the final stretch, begin here, making it the busiest starting point on the French Way. Those who have walked long roads mingle in Sarria with those just setting out, and the square buzzes with people getting the first stamp in their credential. Standing at the symbolic start of the last 100km, a pilgrim feels both the longing to finish and the returning question: why am I walking this road? For a Protestant it recalls that even a late start is no shame, for grace is not measured by distance walked. Tip: climb the stone stairway beside the church into the old town, leave early to stay ahead of the crowds, and book lodging in advance in high season.
