Viana was the last walled city of the kingdom of Navarre, and as a border fortress it keeps a sturdy air. The church of Santa María is renowned for its Renaissance portal carved by Juan de Goyaz, an intricate relief like a triumphal arch that greets visitors. The church draws pilgrim interest through the ambitious Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI and model for Machiavelli's prince, who died in battle outside Viana in 1507 and was buried here. One point must be told precisely: his remains lie not inside the church but beneath a white marble slab set in the ground before the main portal, because requests for burial inside were repeatedly refused.
