Church of Santa María de Melide — Galicia (A Coruña)
Melide is the symbolic junction where the French Way and the coastal Camino del Norte merge into one. On the edge of town, the 12th-century Romanesque Church of Santa María — with its plain semicircular apse, carved façade, and faint traces of Romanesque wall painting inside — still carries the road's long devotion. As two paths meet here, so the stories of pilgrims who set out from different places, from France and the northern coast, gather at Melide's tables. The town is famous for Galician octopus (pulpo á feira), and before the steaming copper pots the pilgrim taverns become places of hospitality where strangers of every nation and story share food from wooden plates. The Camino is surely walked alone, yet here it teaches in the body that it is completed at a table shared together. As the two on the road to Emmaus knew the Lord in the breaking of bread with a stranger, so hospitality and presence dwell at the pilgrim's table. Tip: octopus houses are packed around midday, so go a little early or late, and note the church sits slightly off the town center.
