Church of Santa María de los Arcos — Navarre
The church of Santa María in Los Arcos is a jewel of the Camino, where centuries of additions layered different styles into one building. An old Romanesque cloister, a delicate Plateresque portal like fine silverwork, and a dazzling golden Baroque high altar all coexist. From outside it looks like a plain weathered village church, but stepping through the door the overwhelming richness within astonishes the pilgrim. This dramatic contrast preaches its own sermon. Pilgrim Masses are still lively here, with an evening pilgrim blessing. For a Protestant visitor the church invites reflection on the contrast between outward appearance and the inner person. People look at the outward form, but God looks at the heart, and our worship too depends on inner truth more than visible splendor. Like treasure hidden behind a shabby door, true glory hides within a humble life.
