산후안 성당 (코키우일)

달카우에 코무나에 속한 작은 해안 마을 산후안에서, 1826년 나바로 가문이 땅을 기증하면서 시작된 이 성당(산 후안 바우티스타 데 산 후안, 일명 코키우일)은 1854년 '순회 선교단(Misión Circular)'이 건축에 나섰고, 지금의 건물은 1887년 무렵 마을의 첫 공동묘지 자리 해안가에 세워졌다. 칠로에 16개 교회 가운데 구조적 원형이 가장 온전히 남은 곳으로 꼽히며, 흰 바탕에 붉은색과 검은색으로 마감한 내부, 팔각형 이중 드럼 형태의 종탑이 특징이다. 예수회의 순회 선교 이후 프란치스코회가 이어받아 못 없이 나무 못으로 뼈대를 짜 맞추는 전통이 이 해안 마을 성당에도 그대로 이어졌다. 2020년 진행된 보존 조사에서는 바닥 아래 35개 구획을 발굴해, 이 자리가 본래 공동묘지였던 흔적을 확인하기도 했다. 2000년 칠로에 군도 목조 교회들과 함께 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되었으며, 오늘날에도 큰 관광지 소음 없이 조용히 예배가 이어지는 곳이다. 방문할 때는 팔각 종탑의 독특한 이중 구조와, 죽은 이들의 자리 위에 세워진 예배처라는 사연을 함께 새겨 보자.
Church of San Juan Bautista de San Juan (Coquihuil) — San Juan
The Church of San Juan (San Juan Bautista de San Juan, also known as Coquihuil) began with land donated by the Navarro family in 1826; the Misión Circular started building here in 1854, and the present structure, dating to around 1887, stands on the shore over the town's first cemetery. It is considered one of the most structurally original and unaltered of Chiloé's sixteen churches, notable for its white interior trimmed in red and black and its octagonal, double-drum bell tower. After the Jesuit Circular Mission, Franciscans continued the tradition of joining timber with wooden pegs rather than nails, carried on in this coastal village church as well. A 2020 conservation survey excavated 35 archaeological units beneath its floor, confirming the site's earlier use as a burial ground. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site with the other wooden churches of Chiloé in 2000. Take note of the unusual double structure of its octagonal tower, and the story of a place of worship raised over the resting place of the dead.
