쿠리코 산프란시스코 성당

쿠리코가 도시로 공식 출범하기 12년 전인 1731년, 프란치스코회는 이미 이 자리에 공동체를 세웠다. 아르마스 광장 한편에 자리한 지금의 벽돌 성당은 1880년부터 1899년까지 지어져 1904년 봉헌되었고, 네오고딕 양식의 높은 종탑으로 오랫동안 도시를 대표해 왔다. 1906년, 1928년, 1985년, 2010년 잇따른 지진에 반복해서 부서지고 다시 세워지기를 거듭했던 이 성당은 1986년 국가사적으로 지정되었지만, 2019년 11월 27일 새벽 원인 모를 화재로 건물 대부분이 소실되는 최악의 피해를 입었다. 방화 의혹까지 제기될 만큼 원인이 분명치 않았고, 오랜 지진 피해로 방치되어 있던 와중에 벌어진 화재였던 만큼 지역사회의 충격이 컸다. 이후 정부와 문화유산 당국의 지원으로 구조 안정화 공사가 단계적으로 진행 중이며, 완전한 재건까지는 아직 더 많은 시간과 예산이 필요한 상황이다. 지금은 내부 관람이 어려우니, 광장을 거닐며 여전히 서 있는 외벽과 종탑에서 두 세기 가까운 신앙의 흔적을 느껴보는 정도로 방문 계획을 세우는 것이 현실적이다.
Church of San Francisco, Curicó — Curicó
Twelve years before Curicó's official founding, Franciscans established a community here in 1731. The present brick church, built 1880-1899 and inaugurated in 1904, long defined the city skyline with its neo-Gothic tower. Repeatedly damaged by earthquakes in 1906, 1928, 1985, and 2010, and declared a National Historic Monument in 1986, it suffered its worst blow on November 27, 2019, when a fire of unknown origin destroyed most of the structure — striking a building already weakened and left unattended after years of quake damage. Stabilization work funded by heritage authorities continues. Since interior visits are not yet possible, walk the plaza and take in the surviving walls and tower instead.
