칠레 최북단 아리카이파리나코타주의 알티플라노 고원, 해발 4,392~4,428미터에 자리한 마을 파리나코타에는 1670년 처음 세워지고 1789년 지금의 모습으로 재건된 성당이 있다. 돌과 흙을 섞어 쌓은 벽에 석회를 발라 하얗게 마감하고 짚과 진흙을 얹은 지붕을 올린 이 건물은 스페인 식민지 시대의 메스티소 양식과 안데스 바로크가 뒤섞인 형태를 띠며, 내부 벽화에는 그리스도교 도상과 아이마라 원주민 전통의 상징이 나란히 그려져 있다. 흥미로운 점은 성당이 마을 한가운데 놓인 것이 아니라, 마을 전체가 성당을 중심으로 둘러싸여 형성되었다는 사실이다. 이는 식민지 시대 선교와 정착 정책이 공동체의 물리적 형태 자체를 빚어낸 흔적이라 할 수 있다. 1979년 5월 4일 역사기념물로 지정되어 오늘날까지 보존되고 있다. 다만 해발 4,400미터에 가까운 고지대인 데다 아리카 시내에서 차로 서너 시간 걸리는 외딴 마을이므로, 방문 전 고산증 대비와 여유 있는 일정 확보, 현지 교통편 사전 확인이 꼭 필요하다.

In the village of Parinacota, on Chile's high Andean altiplano at roughly 4,392-4,428 meters above sea level in the Arica y Parinacota region, stands a church first built in 1670 and rebuilt in its current form in 1789. Constructed of stone and mud rendered with whitewash lime and topped with a thatch-and-mud roof, it blends colonial mestizo style with Andean baroque; its interior frescoes place Christian imagery alongside Aymara symbols. Notably, the village itself was laid out around the church rather than the other way around, a physical trace of how colonial mission and settlement policy shaped community life. Declared a Historic Monument on May 4, 1979. Because it sits near 4,400 meters and is several hours by road from Arica, visitors should prepare for altitude, allow extra time, and confirm local transport in advance.
