테나운 성당 (누에스트라 세뇨라 델 파트로시니오)

달카우에 자치구의 작은 마을 테나운에 자리한 이 목조 성당은 19세기 중반 지어졌으며, 세 개의 탑이 나란히 늘어선 독특한 정면부로 칠로에 군도의 목조 교회들 가운데서도 손꼽히는 아름다움을 자랑한다. 다른 성당들과 달리 정면이 마을 광장을 향하지 않고 살짝 비스듬히 틀어져 있어 바다를 향해 배가 들어오는 방향과 광장 쪽 마을 사람들을 동시에 마주 보도록 설계되었는데, 이는 바다로 흩어져 사는 섬 신자들을 향한 배려로 해석된다. 삼나무와 마뇨, 계피나무, 개암나무 등 지역에서 나는 목재로 지어졌고, 파랑과 하양과 빨강이 어우러진 외벽 색채가 소박한 마을 풍경 속에서 산뜻하게 빛난다. 예수회의 순회 선교 이후 프란치스코회가 이어받아 흩어진 섬 공동체마다 교회를 세운 전통 속에서 태어난 이 성당은 2000년 칠로에의 다른 목조 교회들과 함께 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되었다. 배를 타고 바다를 건너야만 예배에 이를 수 있었던 신자들을 향해 바다 쪽으로 얼굴을 돌린 이 성당의 자세는, 흩어진 양 떼를 찾아가는 목자의 마음을 건축으로 옮겨 놓은 듯하다. 세 탑이 이루는 비대칭 정면과 파스텔톤 외벽의 조화를 가까이서 살펴보자.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio, Tenaún — Tenaún
This wooden church in the small town of Tenaún, in the Dalcahue district, was built in the mid-19th century and is celebrated among Chiloé's wooden churches for its distinctive facade of three towers set side by side. Unlike other churches, its front is angled slightly away from the town plaza, positioned to face both the sea — the direction from which boats arrived — and the townspeople in the plaza at once, a design read as a gesture toward island congregants scattered across the water. Built of local cypress, mañío, cinnamon, and hazel wood, its exterior of blue, white, and red paint brightens the modest village setting. Born of the tradition in which Franciscans, succeeding the Jesuits' Circular Mission, raised a church for every scattered island community, it was inscribed alongside Chiloé's other wooden churches as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. That the church turns its face toward the sea, toward believers who could reach worship only by crossing the water, seems to translate into architecture the heart of a shepherd seeking scattered sheep. Look closely at the asymmetrical three-tower facade and its harmony of pastel color.
