네르콘 성당 (누에스트라 세뇨라 데 그라시아)

카스트로에서 남쪽으로 4킬로미터 떨어진 작은 마을 네르콘에 자리한 이 목조 성당은 1879년부터 1890년에 걸쳐 지어졌으며, 신낭만주의 양식의 정교한 목조 파사드를 지녔다. 길이 40미터, 종탑 높이 25미터에 이르는 규모로 칠로에 군도의 목조 교회들 가운데서도 큰 편에 속하며, 알레르세(칠레삼나무)와 삼나무 목재로 뼈대를 세우고 널판으로 외벽을 마감했다. 예수회의 순회 선교 이후 프란치스코회가 이어받아 섬 곳곳에 교회를 세운 전통 속에서, 카스트로 인근 농어촌 공동체를 위해 지어진 본당이며 2000년 칠로에의 다른 목조 교회 열다섯 곳과 함께 유네스코 세계문화유산 '칠로에의 교회들'로 등재되었다. 유럽 성당 건축의 격식을 목재라는 재료와 원주민 목수들의 손기술로 재현해 낸 이 성당은, 유럽 대성당을 그대로 옮겨올 수 없던 변방의 섬에서 신자들이 자신들이 가진 재료와 기술로 최선을 다해 예배의 집을 지었던 흔적을 보여 준다. 카스트로 시내에서 잠시만 이동하면 닿을 수 있어 산 프란시스코 성당과 함께 하루 일정으로 둘러보기 좋다. 25미터 종탑을 올려다보며 소박한 재료로 지어 올린 정교함에 주목해 보자.
Church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia, Nercón — Nercón
Four kilometers south of Castro in the small village of Nercón, this wooden church was built between 1879 and 1890 in a neo-Romantic style with an intricately carved wooden facade. At 40 meters long with a 25-meter bell tower, it ranks among the larger wooden churches of the Chiloé archipelago, its frame raised in alerce and cypress and clad in timber shingles. Built as a parish church for the farming and fishing communities around Castro, within the tradition in which Franciscans, succeeding the Jesuits' Circular Mission, raised churches across the islands, it was inscribed together with fifteen other wooden churches of Chiloé as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. Reproducing the formality of European church architecture in timber, through the craft of local carpenters who could not import a European cathedral to this remote island, it shows believers building a house of worship as best they could with the materials and skills at hand. A short trip from central Castro, it pairs well with the Church of San Francisco for a single day's visit. Look up at the 25-meter bell tower and note the intricacy achieved with such humble materials.
