아구스티나스 성당

이글레시아 데 라스 아구스티나스는 산티아고 센트로 모네다 거리 1054번지에 자리한 성당으로, 이 성당의 이름을 따 앞을 지나는 거리 자체가 '아구스티나스'로 불릴 만큼 도심의 지표가 되어 온 곳이다. 칠레 최초의 여성 수도회인 아우구스티노 봉쇄수녀회는 1571년 8월 13일 이곳에 수녀원을 세우며 출발했으나, 1647년과 1730년의 대지진으로 그 이전의 성당 건물들은 모두 무너지고 말았다. 지금의 성당은 1857년부터 건축가 에우세비오 켈리의 설계로 네오르네상스 양식과 팔라디오풍이 어우러진 모습으로 다시 지어졌으며, 1888년 대주교 마리아노 카사노바가 봉헌식을 집전했다. 성당에는 1875년 독일 발커사에서 제작한 파이프 오르간이 지금도 보존되어 있는데, 이는 국가기념물급으로 평가받는 유서 깊은 악기다. 성당은 1977년 국가기념물로 공식 지정되었다. 참고로 에스타도 거리에 있는 남성 아우구스티노회의 산 아구스틴 성당과는 별개의, 여성 수도회가 세운 독자적인 성당이니 혼동하지 않아야 한다. 방문할 때는 팔라디오풍의 절제된 정면부와 함께, 백오십 년 가까이 자리를 지켜 온 발커 오르간의 소리를 상상해 보길 권한다.
Church of Las Agustinas — Santiago
The Church of Las Agustinas stands at Moneda 1054 in downtown Santiago — so central a landmark that the street running past it is simply named Agustinas. Chile's first women's religious order, the cloistered Augustinian nuns, began here on August 13, 1571, but earthquakes in 1647 and 1730 destroyed every earlier church building on the site. The present church was rebuilt from 1857 in a neo-Renaissance, Palladian-influenced style designed by architect Eusebio Chelli, and Archbishop Mariano Casanova presided over its consecration in 1888. It still preserves a pipe organ built in 1875 by the German firm Walcker, an instrument valued as a historic monument in its own right. The church was formally declared a National Monument in 1977. Note that this is a separate church built by the Augustinian nuns, distinct from the men's Iglesia de San Agustín on Estado Street. Visit to see the restrained Palladian facade and imagine the sound of the nearly 150-year-old Walcker organ still housed within.
