킨차오 코무나에 속한 카구아치 섬은 아차오에서 배로 약 한 시간 반, 카스트로에서는 네 시간 정도 걸리는 곳으로, 열여섯 칠로에 교회 가운데 순례지로서의 성격이 가장 뚜렷한 곳이다. 신심의 시작은 1778년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 스페인 출신 프란치스코회 선교사 힐라리오 마르티네스 신부가 '디비노 헤수스 나사레노' 상을 군도에 들여왔는데, 이 상을 어느 섬이 모실 것인가를 두고 다툼이 일자 조정 경주로 정했고, 카구아치의 뱃사공들이 승리하면서 성상이 이 섬에 자리 잡았다는 이야기가 지금도 전해진다. 성당 건물은 1919년 화재로 완전히 소실되었고, 지금 서 있는 세 번째 건물은 1925년 주민들이 코이게, 과이테카스 삼나무, 알레르세, 테파, 마뇨 등 토착 목재로 직접 재건한 것이다. 매년 8월 30일의 '나사레노 축제'는 칠로에 군도 전체에서 가장 중요한 종교 축제로 꼽히며, 배를 타고 모여드는 순례객이 5천 명을 넘는다. 성상을 모신 배가 섬 주변을 도는 행렬과 마을을 가로지르는 도보 행렬이 이어지고, 겨울철 여행이 어려운 이들을 위해 1월에도 별도 축제가 열린다. 방문객은 아차오나 카스트로에서 출항하는 배편과 시간을 미리 확인하고, 축제 기간에는 숙소와 배편이 빠르게 마감되니 여유 있게 예약해 두는 것이 좋다.
Church of Jesús Nazareno de Caguach — Caguach Island, Quinchao
Caguach Island, in the commune of Quinchao, is reached by boat — roughly ninety minutes from Achao, or about four hours from Castro — and among the sixteen churches of Chiloé, it carries the clearest character of an active pilgrimage site. The devotion traces back to 1778, when the Spanish Franciscan missionary Fray Hilario Martínez brought the image of the 'Divino Jesús Nazareno' to the archipelago. When rival island communities disputed which island would host it, a rowing race was reportedly held to settle the matter, and Caguach's oarsmen won, securing the image for their island — a story still told today. The church burned completely in a 1919 fire, and the current, third building was raised in 1925 by local residents using native coigüe, Guaitecas cypress, alerce, tepa, and mañío wood. The annual Fiesta del Nazareno on August 30 is considered the single most important religious festival in the entire Chiloé archipelago, drawing more than 5,000 pilgrims who arrive by boat. A boat procession circles the island carrying the image, followed by a walking procession through the village, with a separate January observance for those unable to travel in winter. Visitors should confirm boat schedules from Achao or Castro in advance, since lodging and transport fill quickly during the festival and are best reserved well ahead of time.
