정동제일교회

1885년 입국한 아펜젤러 선교사가 세운 한국 최초의 감리교회로, 1897년 봉헌된 벧엘예배당은 현존하는 가장 오래된 서양식 개신교 예배당이며 사적으로 지정되어 있다. 아펜젤러가 자신의 집에서 몇 사람과 드린 예배가 자라나 붉은 벽돌의 예배당이 되기까지 십여 년, 정동교회는 배재학당·이화학당과 이웃하며 정동 선교 지구의 심장이 되었다. 이필주·박동완 등 3.1운동 민족대표를 배출했고, 배재와 이화의 학생들이 이 예배당에서 신앙과 민족의식을 함께 키워 신앙과 민족운동이 만나는 현장이 되었다. 1918년에는 한국 최초의 파이프오르간이 이 예배당에 설치되어 찬송과 근대 음악 문화의 통로가 되었으며, 오르간 헌금을 모은 이들의 정성이 지금도 이야기로 전해진다. 설립자 아펜젤러는 1902년 성경 번역 회의차 목포로 가던 뱃길에서 사고를 만나 생을 마쳐, 이 교회는 순직한 선교사의 첫 열매이자 기념비로 남았다. 고딕풍의 아담한 벧엘예배당은 화려하지 않으나 단정한 벽돌 쌓임새가 초기 개신교의 정신을 닮았다. 백삼십 년 넘게 같은 자리에서 예배가 끊이지 않은 것 자체가 이 교회의 가장 큰 증언이다. 붉은 벽돌의 벧엘예배당은 정동길 산책의 백미이니, 내부의 소박한 예배 공간과 오르간까지 꼭 들여다보라.
Chungdong First Methodist Church — Seoul Jung-gu
Founded by Henry Appenzeller soon after his arrival in 1885, Chungdong First Methodist Church is Korea's first Methodist congregation, and its Bethel Chapel, dedicated in 1897, is the oldest surviving Western-style Protestant sanctuary in the country and a designated historic site. Standing among the mission schools of Jeong-dong, it nurtured national leaders — including signers of the 1919 Declaration of Independence — and received Korea's first pipe organ in 1918. Appenzeller himself died at sea in 1902 on his way to a Bible translation meeting, making the chapel a memorial to a missionary who spent himself to the end. The red-brick chapel, plain and dignified, is the jewel of any walk along Jeongdong-gil.
