부산 초량교회

1892년 미국 북장로교 베어드(배위량) 선교사의 사역으로 시작된 부산 최초의 장로교회로, 부산·경남 장로교 선교의 출발점이 된 교회다. 1891년 부산에 도착한 베어드는 초량에 선교 기지를 마련하고 사랑방을 열어 오가는 이들에게 성경을 가르쳤으며, 나귀를 타고 경남 내륙 곳곳을 도는 순회 전도 여행으로 복음의 길을 닦았다. 그 사랑방 성경공부에서 시작된 작은 공동체가 자라 오늘의 초량교회가 되었고, 베어드는 훗날 평양으로 옮겨 숭실학당을 세워 한국 기독교 교육의 아버지 중 한 사람이 되었다. 일제강점기에는 주기철 목사가 1931년부터 이 교회에서 시무하며 강단을 지켰는데, 훗날 평양 산정현교회에서 신사참배를 거부하다 순교하게 되는 그의 신앙적 기초가 이 시기에 더욱 굳어졌다. 한국전쟁 때 부산이 임시수도가 되자 교회는 밀려드는 피난민들을 품는 피난처가 되었고, 흩어졌던 성도들이 이곳에서 예배를 이어 갔다. 항구 도시의 관문에서 복음이 내륙으로 퍼져 나간 길목을 130년 넘게 지켜 온, 부산 개신교 역사의 산 증인이라 할 만하다. 교회 역사관에서 베어드 선교사의 사역과 주기철 목사 관련 자료들을 찾아보며 두 사람의 발자취를 따라가 보자.
Choryang Church, Busan — Busan Dong-gu
Begun in 1892 through the ministry of Presbyterian missionary William Baird, Choryang Church is Busan's first Presbyterian congregation and the launching point of missions into South Gyeongsang province. From his mission base in Choryang, Baird taught the Bible in his guest room and itinerated on donkey-back through the inland regions, before moving north to found Soongsil Academy in Pyongyang. The martyr Rev. Ju Ki-cheol served this pulpit from 1931, deepening the spiritual foundations of his later resistance to forced Shinto worship, and during the Korean War the church sheltered refugees who poured into the wartime capital. For over 130 years it has stood as a living witness at the gateway through which the gospel moved from the port inland; the church history room preserves materials on both Baird and Ju Ki-cheol.
