초남이성지
초남이성지는 '호남의 사도'로 불리는 유항검 아우구스티노의 생가터가 있는 성지로, 호남 천주교 신앙의 요람이라 불린다. 이 조용한 시골 마을에서 자란 신앙이 훗날 호남 전역으로 퍼져 나갔으니, 이곳은 한 사람의 회심이 온 지역을 적신 역사의 출발점이다. 특히 이곳은 2021년, 바우배기라 불리는 언덕에서 1791년 신해박해 때 순교한 한국 최초의 순교자 윤지충과 권상연, 그리고 윤지헌 복자의 유해가 발견되면서 한국 교회사에 큰 사건으로 떠올랐다. 200년 넘게 땅속에 묻혀 있던 첫 순교자들의 흔적이 다시 세상에 드러난 것이다. 윤지충과 권상연은 조상 제사 문제로 신앙을 버리라는 요구를 받았을 때, 신앙 양심을 지키다 죽음을 택한 이들이다. 하나님보다 앞세울 것이 없다는 이들의 결단은, 다른 신을 두지 말라는 첫 계명의 무게가 얼마나 무거운지를 다시 생각하게 한다. 유해가 발견된 바우배기 언덕과 유항검의 생가터를 함께 돌아보며, 이 땅에 처음 뿌려진 믿음의 씨앗을 되새겨 보라.
Chonami Holy Site — Jeonbuk Wanju-gun
Chonami Holy Site preserves the birthplace of Yu Hang-geom Augustine, the 'apostle of Honam,' and is called the cradle of Catholic faith in the region. The faith that grew in this quiet country village later spread across all of Honam, making this the starting point of a history in which one man's conversion soaked a whole region. It rose to great prominence in Korean church history in 2021, when the remains of Korea's first martyrs — Yun Ji-chung and Gwon Sang-yeon, executed in the persecution of 1791, along with the blessed Yun Ji-heon — were discovered on the hill called Baubaegi. Traces of the first martyrs, buried in the earth for over two centuries, came again to light. Yun Ji-chung and Gwon Sang-yeon, when pressed to abandon their faith over the matter of ancestral rites, chose death rather than violate the conscience of their faith. Their resolve, that nothing may be set before God, presses us again to weigh how heavy is the first commandment to have no other gods. Visit both the discovery site at Baubaegi and the Yu family homestead, and reflect on the first seed of faith sown in this land.
