치얀 대성당

치얀 대성당은 1939년 1월 24일 도시를 초토화하며 전국에서 약 2만8천 명의 목숨을 앗아간 치얀 대지진으로 옛 성당이 완전히 무너진 자리에, 그 폐허를 딛고 다시 세워진 건물이다. 재해 직후 치얀 교구장 호르헤 라라인 코타포스 주교는 성 바르톨로메에게 봉헌될 새 대성당 건립을 서둘렀고, 조카이자 건축가인 에르난 라라인 에라수리스가 산티아고 가톨릭대학 졸업 작품으로 설계를 맡아 1941년 첫 삽을 떴다. 콜로니얼풍의 옛 성당과 달리, 새 성당은 파리 오를리 공항의 비행선 격납고에서 영감을 얻은 파격적인 현대 건축으로, 기도하듯 맞잡은 두 손의 형상을 형상화했다고 전해진다. 폭 20미터, 길이 52미터, 높이 20미터에 이르는 열한 개의 포물선 아치가 이루는 볼트 구조는 전체가 철근콘크리트로 지어져 지진에 견디도록 설계되었으며, 1960년 10월 15일 마침내 봉헌되었다. 성당 옆에는 1939년 지진으로 희생된 치얀 시민들을 기리는 높이 36미터의 기념 십자가가 세워져, 그날의 아픔을 잊지 않으려는 도시의 마음을 전한다. 화려한 첨탑 대신 낯선 곡선을 택한 이 성당의 실루엣은, 재난을 통과한 도시가 옛 모습 그대로가 아니라 전혀 새로운 모습으로 다시 일어설 수 있음을 보여 준다. 성당에 들어서기 전 기념 십자가 앞에서 잠시 걸음을 멈추어 보자.
Chillán Cathedral — Chillán
Chillán Cathedral stands where the earlier church stood before it was leveled by the January 24, 1939 earthquake that killed some 28,000 people nationwide. Bishop Jorge Larraín Cotapos moved quickly to build a new cathedral dedicated to San Bartolomé, and his nephew, architect Hernán Larraín Errázuriz, designed it as his graduation project at the Catholic University of Chile, breaking ground in 1941. Unlike the colonial-style church it replaced, the new building took its daring modern form from the dirigible hangars of Paris's Orly Airport, said to evoke two hands clasped in prayer. Its vault — 20 meters wide, 52 meters long, 20 meters high, spanned by eleven parabolic arches — was built entirely of reinforced concrete for earthquake resistance, and the cathedral was finally dedicated on October 15, 1960. Beside it stands a 36-meter memorial cross honoring the Chillán residents who died in the 1939 quake, keeping that day's grief in view.
