천진암성지

천진암성지는 1779년 무렵 이벽, 정약전, 권철신, 권일신 등 젊은 유학자들이 앵자봉 자락의 암자에 모여 강학회를 열고 서학 서적과 천주교 교리를 깊이 연구한 곳으로, 한국 천주교회의 발상지로 꼽힌다. 선교사가 한 사람도 들어오기 전에, 학자들이 스스로 책을 읽고 진리를 탐구하다 신앙에 이르렀다는 사실은 세계 교회사에서도 유례를 찾기 어려운 일이다. 이곳에서 싹튼 신앙은 이승훈이 1784년 베이징에서 세례를 받고 돌아오며 한국 천주교회의 창립으로 이어졌다. 말씀과 책을 통해 스스로 진리를 찾아간 이들의 구도 여정은, 성경으로 돌아가자던 종교개혁의 정신과도 맞닿아 있어 개신교 순례자에게도 시사하는 바가 크다. 다만 이후 이벽을 비롯한 여러 창립 선조가 박해와 배교의 갈림길에서 각기 다른 길을 걸었던 역사도 함께 기억할 만하다. 경내에는 한국 천주교 창립 선조 5위의 묘역과, 백 년 계획으로 추진 중인 대성당 건립 터가 넓게 펼쳐져 있다. 앵자봉 자락의 조용한 묘역까지 걸어 올라가며, 아무도 가르쳐 주지 않은 진리를 스스로 찾아 나선 초기 구도자들의 열심을 묵상해 보자.
Cheonjinam Holy Site — Gyeonggi Gwangju-si
Around 1779, young Confucian scholars including Yi Byeok, Jeong Yak-jeon, and Gwon Cheol-sin gathered at a hermitage on Aengjabong for study sessions that led them to Catholic faith through books alone, before any missionary arrived — making this the cradle of Catholicism in Korea. The faith kindled here bore fruit when Yi Seung-hun was baptized in Beijing in 1784 and returned to found the Korean Catholic Church. Their journey of seeking truth through texts echoes the Reformation's own return to the written Word, giving Protestant pilgrims much to ponder. The site holds the graves of five founding figures and the vast grounds of a basilica being built on a hundred-year plan; a quiet walk up Aengjabong invites reflection on seekers who found truth no one had taught them.
