청주제일교회

청주제일교회는 1904년에 설립된 충북 최초의 장로교회로, '충북 기독교의 어머니 교회'로 불린다. 미국 북장로회 선교사들과 그들과 함께 일한 한국인 조사들의 전도로 시작되어, 청주 지역 복음화의 진원지가 되었고 교회가 세운 여러 학교는 이 지역 근대교육의 요람이 되었다. 특히 3.1운동과 일제강점기의 민족운동에 이 교회 교인들이 앞장서면서, 신앙과 나라 사랑이 하나로 흐른 역사를 남겼다. 한 교회에서 수많은 교회가 분립하고 개척되어 나간 발자취는, 사도행전의 안디옥 교회가 바나바와 바울을 세상 끝으로 파송했던 것처럼 '보내는 교회'의 모델을 보여준다. 백여 년 세월 동안 이 교회는 청주라는 한 도시에 복음의 씨를 뿌리고, 그 씨가 자라 다시 새로운 공동체로 퍼져 나가는 선순환을 이어 왔다. 교회에는 초기 역사를 담은 자료와 사진이 보존되어 있어, 충북 개신교의 뿌리를 더듬어 볼 수 있다. 인근 탑동양관과 함께 둘러보면 선교사들이 뿌린 씨앗이 어떻게 한 교회를 통해 온 지역으로 퍼져 나갔는지가 입체적으로 다가온다. 교회에 보존된 초기 역사 자료를 살펴보고 인근 탑동양관까지 이어 걸으며 청주 선교의 역사를 되짚어 보자.
Cheongju Jeil Church — Chungbuk Sangdang-gu
Founded in 1904 as the first Presbyterian church in North Chungcheong, Cheongju Jeil Church is honored as the province's 'mother church.' Begun through the evangelism of American Northern Presbyterian missionaries and the Korean helpers who worked with them, it became the wellspring of the gospel in Cheongju, and the schools it founded were a cradle of modern education for the region. Its members stood at the front of the March First movement and other resistance under Japanese rule, leaving a history where faith and love of country flowed as one. Having planted numerous daughter congregations, it models the 'sending church' of Antioch, which sent Barnabas and Paul to the ends of the earth. For over a century it has sown gospel seed in one city and watched that seed grow and spread into new communities. Its preserved early records and photographs, taken together with the nearby Tapdong houses, give a rounded picture of how the gospel reshaped this city.
