감람산 정상에 자리한 이 작은 팔각 건물은 예수님이 부활 후 제자들이 보는 앞에서 하늘로 오르셨다는 승천 사건(행 1:9-12; 눅 24:50-51)을 기념한다. 384년경 처음 기념 성소가 세워졌고, 지금의 석조 에디쿨레는 십자군 시대에 지어진 것이다. 초기 순례자들은 이곳을 지붕이 뚫린 둥근 건물로 지어, 예수님이 오르신 하늘을 향해 열어 두었다고 전한다. 내부에는 예수님이 승천 직전 마지막으로 디디셨다는 '승천 바위'가 있고, 그 위에 오른발 자국이 새겨져 있다. 다만 이 발자국은 역사적 사실이 아니라 신심에서 비롯된 전승임을 정직히 밝혀야 한다. 1187년 살라딘이 예루살렘을 되찾은 뒤 이곳은 이슬람 사원으로 바뀌었고, 팔각 드럼과 돔 지붕은 무슬림 시대의 증축이다. 오늘날에도 무슬림이 관리하지만 기독교 축일에는 예배가 허용되어, 그리스도교와 이슬람의 역사가 겹쳐 있는 독특한 장소다. 좁은 뜰에 홀로 선 소박한 건물이지만, 감람산 정상이라는 위치만으로도 순례의 마침표를 찍기에 부족함이 없다. 개신교 순례자는 발자국 전승에 매이기보다, '이 예수는 하늘로 가심을 본 그대로 오시리라'는 천사의 약속(행 1:11)을 붙들며 재림 소망을 되새기기 좋은 자리다.
Chapel of the Ascension — Jerusalem
On the summit of the Mount of Olives, this small octagonal structure commemorates the ascension of the risen Jesus before his disciples (Acts 1:9-12; Luke 24:50-51). A first shrine rose around 384; the present stone edicule is Crusader-era. Inside, a slab called the Ascension Rock bears the imprint of a right foot — though this footprint is a devotional tradition, not historical fact, and should be named honestly as such. After Saladin retook Jerusalem in 1187 the site became a mosque, and the octagonal drum and domed roof are Muslim additions. Still Muslim-administered, it opens for Christian worship on feast days, a rare place where Christian and Islamic history overlap. Rather than dwell on the footprint, hold to the angels' promise of his return.
