선교사 챔니스 주택

대구 청라언덕의 1910년대 선교사 주택 세 채 가운데 하나로, 챔니스 선교사 등이 거주하던 미국 방갈로풍 2층 벽돌집이며 대구광역시 유형문화재로 지정되어 있다. 남향의 베란다와 낮게 퍼진 지붕선이 특징인 이 집은 20세기 초 미국 중산층 주택 양식을 대구 언덕 위에 옮겨 놓은 듯한 모습으로, 근대 주거 건축사 연구에도 귀중한 자료가 된다. 내부에는 당시 선교사들이 실제로 쓰던 침대와 책상, 피아노와 오르간, 벽난로와 생활용품들이 보존되어 있어 백 년 전 선교사 가정의 하루를 눈앞에 그려 볼 수 있다. 손때 묻은 가구와 낡은 살림살이들은 이들이 잠시 다녀간 손님이 아니라 이 땅에 뿌리내려 살고, 자녀를 낳아 기르고, 이웃과 정을 나눈 사람들이었음을 조용히 증언한다. 선교사들은 이 언덕의 집에서 지역을 순회하는 전도 여행을 떠났고, 병원과 학교의 사역을 계획했으며, 한국어와 씨름하며 성경을 가르쳤다. 선교가 강단의 설교만이 아니라 밥상과 뜰, 서재와 응접실까지 이어지는 삶 전체의 일이었음을 느끼게 하는 공간이다. 블레어 주택, 스윗즈 주택과 함께 세 채를 견주어 보며 방마다 남은 옛 물건들을 찬찬히 들여다보자.
Chamness Missionary House — Daegu Jung-gu
This American bungalow-style brick house, one of the three 1910s missionary residences on Cheongna Hill, was home to missionary Chamness and is a designated Daegu cultural heritage site. With its south-facing veranda and low-spreading roofline, it transplants an early twentieth-century American home onto a Korean hillside, and its rooms preserve the missionaries' actual beds, desks, organ, fireplace, and household goods. These well-worn belongings testify that the missionary families were not passing visitors but neighbors who put down roots, raised children, and shared life here. From this house they set out on itinerating journeys, planned hospital and school work, and taught the Bible — a reminder that mission was carried out with whole lives, not sermons alone.
