Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada — La Rioja
This cathedral was built over the tomb of Saint Dominic, an 11th-century saint of action who with his own hands laid roads, a bridge and a hospital for pilgrims; the town's name, 'the causeway,' honors his work. Inside stands a glass henhouse where a living white cock and hen, replaced regularly since the Middle Ages, are kept. This comes from the tale of a pilgrim wrongly hanged who was kept alive by the saint's help, while a roasted fowl on the doubting judge's plate came back to life and crowed in witness. The miracle of the cock and hen is moving, but it must be named clearly as a pious tradition, not historical fact. Yet the truth beneath the shell lives on. Saint Dominic embodied through charity, hospitality and repentance the same road of faith on which the apostle James was martyred by Herod's sword. For a Protestant visitor this is a place to reflect on faith that works. True faith is proven not by words but by hands that lay roads and tend the sick.
