Cathedral of San Marcos, Arica — Arica
The Cathedral of San Marcos was built between 1875 and 1876, commissioned by the Peruvian government then ruling this region, after the earlier church was destroyed in the catastrophic 1868 earthquake and tsunami. Unusually, it is built not of brick or stone but of prefabricated cast and wrought iron, shipped from Europe and assembled on site by French engineers. Popular tradition credits the ironwork to Gustave Eiffel's Paris workshop, though historians dispute this for lack of documentation. Arica passed from Peru to Chile after the War of the Pacific and a 1929 treaty, and the cathedral remained standing as the region's spiritual center through the border change. Facing Plaza Colón, its white facade and spire survived both earthquake and geopolitical upheaval, and visitors can examine its unusual iron columns and arches inside.
