세비야 산 호르헤 성채(종교재판 기념관)

과달키비르 강가, 트리아나 다리 옆에 자리한 산 호르헤 성채 터입니다. 이곳에는 15세기부터 18세기까지 세비야 종교재판소가 있었고, 지금은 발굴된 지하 유구 위에 세운 기념관이 그 무거운 역사를 증언합니다. 1559년부터 1562년 사이, 세비야에서 복음주의 신앙을 품었던 이들이 이 성채에서 심문받았고, 광장에서 열린 아우토 데 페(auto-da-fe, 신앙 재판 의식)를 통해 처형되거나 화형당했습니다. 개신교의 관점에서 이 자리는 순교의 기억이지만, 역사적으로는 유대인과 무슬림 개종자를 비롯한 수많은 이들의 양심이 함께 짓밟힌 자리이기도 합니다. 기념관은 이 어두운 역사를 미화하거나 감추지 않고 정직하게 마주하며, 양심과 신앙의 자유가 왜 그토록 소중한지를 조용히 되묻게 합니다. 전시는 절제되어 있고 차분하며, 활기찬 트리아나 시장과 한 건물을 이루고 있어, 강변을 따라 걷는 산책과 함께 방문하면 역사와 일상이 겹쳐진 이 도시의 결을 한층 깊이 느낄 수 있습니다. 서둘러 지나치기보다 잠시 걸음을 멈추고, 이 자리에서 스러진 이들의 이름과 침묵을 헤아려 보길 권합니다.
Castillo de San Jorge (Inquisition Museum) — Andalusia (Seville)
Beside the Triana bridge on the bank of the Guadalquivir lie the ruins of Castillo de San Jorge. From the 15th to the 18th century this was the seat of the Seville Inquisition, and today a museum built over the excavated foundations bears witness to that history. Between 1559 and 1562, those in Seville who embraced evangelical faith were interrogated here and, through the auto-da-fe held in the public square, were executed or burned. For Protestants this is a place of martyrdom, yet historically it is also where the consciences of countless others, including Jewish and Muslim converts, were crushed. The museum faces this dark past honestly, without glossing over it, and asks anew why freedom of conscience and faith matter. Sharing a building with the lively Triana market, it pairs well with a riverside walk.
