가이사랴 빌립보 (바니아스)

헤르몬 산 기슭의 가이사랴 빌립보는 베드로의 위대한 신앙 고백이 나온 무대다. 이곳에서 예수가 '너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐' 물으셨을 때 베드로는 '주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다'라고 답했고, 예수는 '이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세우리니 음부의 권세가 이기지 못하리라'고 하셨다(마 16:13-20). 이 지역은 본래 헬레니즘·로마 시대에 목신 판(Pan)을 섬기던 큰 동굴 신전이 있던 이교 예배의 중심지였고, 요단강의 3대 수원 가운데 하나인 바니아스 샘이 그 동굴에서 솟아난다. 사람들은 이 깊은 동굴을 지하 세계로 통하는 문으로 여겼기에, '음부의 문'이 교회를 이기지 못한다는 말씀이 바로 그 현장에서 선포되었다는 점은 특별한 울림을 준다. 이런 배경 이해는 본문을 더 생생하게 하지만, 말씀의 핵심은 어디까지나 그리스도 위에 세워진 교회의 승리에 있음을 놓치지 말아야 한다. 오늘날 이곳은 헤르몬 개천(바니아스) 자연보호구역으로 관리된다. 방문할 때는 동굴과 샘을 바라보며 자신의 고백을 조용히 되새겨 보기를 권한다.
Caesarea Philippi (Banias) — Golan
At the foot of Mount Hermon, Caesarea Philippi is the setting of Peter's great confession. When Jesus asked, 'Who do you say I am?' Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,' and Jesus declared, 'On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it' (Matt 16:13-20). The site was a pagan center with a great cave-shrine to the god Pan in Hellenistic and Roman times, and the Banias spring — one of the three sources of the Jordan — gushes from that cave. People regarded the deep cave as a gateway to the underworld, giving vivid force to the words spoken right there about the 'gates of Hades.' Such background enriches the text, but its heart remains the victory of the church built on Christ. Today it is the Hermon Stream (Banias) Nature Reserve. Gazing at the cave and spring, quietly renew your own confession.
