부산진교회

1891년 호주장로교 선교사들이 세운 부산 최초의 교회로, 호주 선교부의 부산·경남 선교 거점이 된 교회다. 호주장로교의 한국 선교는 1889년 내한했다가 이듬해 부산에서 병으로 숨진 젊은 선교사 데이비스의 죽음에서 비롯되었는데, 그의 희생 소식이 호주 교회를 움직여 오히려 더 많은 선교사가 부산으로 건너오게 되었다. 뒤이어 온 매카이 선교사 부부와 멘지스를 비롯한 여선교사들은 좌천동 일대에 교회를 세우고 고아원과 일신여학교, 진료소를 열어 소외된 이들을 먼저 품었다. 특히 백정과 여성 등 천대받던 사람들에게 복음의 문을 활짝 연 초기 사역은, 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 다 그리스도 안에서 하나라는 갈라디아서 말씀의 실천이었다. 교회에서 자라난 신자들은 1919년 만세운동과 지역 계몽운동에도 앞장서며 신앙과 삶이 하나임을 보여 주었다. 130년 넘게 좌천동 같은 자리를 지켜 온 이 교회는 부산 기독교의 뿌리이자, 한 알의 밀알이 된 데이비스의 죽음이 맺은 열매다. 교회 곁에 남아 있는 옛 일신여학교 교사와 함께 좌천동 선교 유적 일대를 천천히 걸어 보자.
Busanjin Church — Busan Dong-gu
Founded in 1891 by Australian Presbyterian missionaries, Busanjin Church is Busan's first church and became the hub of the Australian mission in the region. That mission itself was born of sacrifice: the young missionary Joseph Davies died of illness in Busan in 1890, months after arriving, and news of his death stirred the Australian churches to send many more workers in his place. The missionaries who followed — the Mackays, Belle Menzies, and other women workers — planted a church, orphanage, school, and clinic in Jwacheon-dong, opening the gospel first to the despised, including outcasts and women, living out Paul's declaration that all are one in Christ. The church has kept its ground for over 130 years as the taproot of Busan Christianity; walk the surrounding mission quarter with the old Ilsin school building next door.
