성경전래지·마량진(아펜젤러 순직기념)
충남 서천의 마량진은 1816년 영국 함선 알세스트호와 리라호가 조선 해안을 탐사하던 중 마량진 첨사 조대복에게 성경을 건네, 이 땅에 처음으로 성경이 전래된 곳으로 기념된다. 당시 첨사 조대복이 함선에 올랐다가 영국 함장 바실 홀에게서 성경을 받은 일이 양측의 기록에 남아 있어, 개신교 선교사가 정식으로 입국한 1885년보다 무려 70년 가까이 앞선 '말씀의 첫 상륙'으로 평가된다. 비록 조선 관리는 그 책의 내용을 알지 못했고 성경도 이내 조정에 바쳐졌지만, 하나님의 말씀이 사람의 선교보다 먼저 이 땅의 해안에 닿았다는 사실은 깊은 상징으로 남는다. 공교롭게도 같은 서해 바다에서 1902년 한국 감리교 선교의 개척자 헨리 아펜젤러 선교사가 성경 번역 회의에 참석하러 가던 중 선박 사고로 순직해, 이곳에는 성경전래 기념관과 아펜젤러 순직 기념 시설이 함께 세워져 있다. 성경이 처음 닿은 바다와, 그 성경을 우리말로 옮기려다 생을 마친 선교사의 바다가 겹치는 이중의 의미를 지닌 개신교 성지다. 기념관과 이를 품은 언덕은 서해를 향해 열려 있어, 말씀이 바다를 건너온 그 길을 마주하며 묵상하기에 좋다. 기념관 앞 언덕에서 서해를 바라보며 '주의 말씀이 달음질하여 영광스럽게 되고'(살후 3:1)라는 말씀 위에 흐른 이 땅의 역사를 묵상해 보자.
Bible Landing Site, Maryangjin — Chungnam Seocheon-gun
Maryangjin in Seocheon is remembered as the place where the Bible first reached Korea: in 1816, as the British ships Alceste and Lyra surveyed the coast, Captain Basil Hall presented a Bible to the local Joseon officer Jo Dae-bok, an event recorded on both sides. This came nearly seventy years before Protestant missionaries formally arrived in 1885 — the Word landing on this shore before any missionary did. Though the officer could not read the book and it was soon sent up to the court, the symbolism runs deep. In these same waters, pioneer Methodist missionary Henry Appenzeller perished in a shipwreck in 1902 while traveling to a Bible translation meeting, so a memorial hall and church now mark this doubly significant site. Facing the open West Sea, it is a fitting place to ponder the Word that crossed the ocean. 'That the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified' (2 Thess. 3:1).
