벳새다

벳새다는 예수의 제자 베드로와 안드레, 그리고 빌립의 고향으로 전해지는 어촌이다(요 1:44; 12:21). 예수는 이 부근에서 맹인의 눈을 두 단계에 걸쳐 뜨게 하셨고(막 8:22-26), 오병이어의 기적도 벳새다 인근 빈 들에서 일어났다(눅 9:10). 그러나 예수는 큰 권능을 보고도 회개하지 않은 벳새다를 향해 '화 있을진저'라고 탄식하셨다(마 11:21). 정확한 위치를 두고는 오랜 논쟁이 있는데, 호수에서 다소 떨어진 내륙의 엣텔(et-Tell)과 호숫가에 가까운 엘아라이지(el-Araj)가 두 후보로 맞선다. 특히 엘아라이지에서는 2019년 이후 발굴이 이어지며 '베드로'를 언급하는 것으로 읽히는 비문 조각과 모자이크가 있는 비잔틴 바실리카가 드러나, 초기 순례자들이 찾던 '사도들의 교회' 자리일 가능성이 크게 부각되었다. 다만 어느 곳이 성경의 벳새다인지는 아직 학계에서 확정되지 않았다. 방문할 때는 후보지 논쟁 자체보다, 평범한 어부들을 불러 사람 낚는 어부로 삼으신 부르심을 떠올리며 잔잔한 호숫가를 걸어 보기를 권한다.
Bethsaida (Julias) — Galilee
Bethsaida is remembered as the fishing hometown of Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44; 12:21). Nearby Jesus healed a blind man in two stages (Mark 8:22-26), and the feeding of the five thousand took place in the wilderness near Bethsaida (Luke 9:10). Yet Jesus lamented over Bethsaida for refusing to repent despite mighty works: 'Woe to you' (Matt 11:21). Its exact location is long debated between inland et-Tell and lakeside el-Araj. Since 2019, excavations at el-Araj have uncovered a Byzantine basilica with mosaics and an inscription read as naming 'Peter,' strengthening its claim to be the early pilgrims' 'Church of the Apostles.' Which site is the biblical Bethsaida remains unsettled among scholars. Rather than the location debate, walk the calm shore and recall the call that made ordinary fishermen into fishers of people.
