Berea — modern Veria in Greece — is where Paul and Silas fled by night from Thessalonica, and Acts 17 singles out its people for rare praise: they 'were of more noble character,' for they 'received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true' (Acts 17:11). Their habit of neither swallowing nor rejecting what they heard, but testing it against Scripture themselves, has been honored ever since as the mark of a Berean. Today a stepped monument (bema) in the town center marks the traditional site of Paul's preaching, ringed by vivid mosaics of his life and of the Macedonian vision. This posture of weighing everything against the Word resonates deeply with the Reformation's cry of sola Scriptura, making Veria a meaningful stop for Protestant pilgrims.
