나사렛 수태고지성당

나사렛 수태고지성당은 천사 가브리엘이 마리아에게 예수님의 잉태를 알린 사건(눅 1:26-38)의 전승지에 세워진 성당으로, 이탈리아 건축가 조반니 무치오가 설계해 1969년 완공된 현 건물은 중동 최대 규모의 교회로 꼽힌다. 나사렛은 '나사렛에서 무슨 선한 것이 날 수 있느냐'(요 1:46)는 말을 들을 만큼 무명의 갈릴리 산골 마을이었는데, 바로 그곳이 성육신의 소식이 처음 울린 자리가 되었다. 성당 지하에는 마리아의 집으로 전해지는 동굴이 보존되어 있고, 그 둘레에서 비잔틴 시대와 십자군 시대 교회의 유구가 발굴되어 초대교회부터 이어진 경배의 역사를 증언한다. 지하 동굴 제단에는 '여기서 말씀이 육신이 되셨다(Verbum caro hic factum est)'는 라틴어 문구가 새겨져 있어, 요한복음 1장 14절의 선언이 특정한 시간과 장소에서 일어난 역사임을 상기시킨다. 성당 안팎의 회랑에는 세계 각국이 봉헌한 성모자 그림과 모자이크가 걸려 있는데, 한복을 입은 한국의 성모자상도 찾을 수 있어 복음이 땅끝까지 이른 여정을 실감하게 한다. 거대한 콘크리트 돔은 마리아를 상징하는 백합을 거꾸로 세운 형상으로 설계되었고, 위층 대성당에서는 지하 동굴이 내려다보인다. 개신교 순례자에게 이곳은 마리아 공경의 자리이기보다, 말씀이 육신이 되어 가장 낮은 마을에 임하신 성육신의 신비와 '말씀대로 내게 이루어지이다'(눅 1:38)라고 응답한 한 사람의 순종을 묵상하는 자리다. 인근의 성 요셉 성당과 옛 나사렛 마을 유적을 함께 둘러보면 예수님의 소년 시절 배경이 더 생생해진다.
Basilica of the Annunciation — Nazareth
The Basilica of the Annunciation, designed by Giovanni Muzio and completed in 1969, is among the largest churches in the Middle East, rising over the grotto traditionally venerated as Mary's home where Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38). Nazareth was so obscure that people asked whether anything good could come from it (John 1:46)—yet here the Incarnation was first announced. Beneath the modern building lie remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches, evidence of unbroken veneration, and the grotto altar bears the Latin inscription 'Verbum caro hic factum est'—here the Word became flesh. Around the courtyard and nave hang Madonna images donated by nations worldwide, including a Korean Mary and child in hanbok. For Protestant pilgrims the basilica is above all a place to ponder the mystery of the Word made flesh in a lowly village, and Mary's obedient reply: 'Let it be to me according to your word.'
