필라르 대성전

사라고사의 에브로 강가에 여러 개의 돔과 탑을 거느린 거대한 바로크 대성전이다. 현재의 건물은 17~18세기에 지어졌다. 전승에 따르면 사도 야고보가 스페인에서 복음을 전하던 중 낙심했을 때 성모가 기둥(pilar) 위에 나타나 그를 격려했다고 하는데, 이는 가톨릭 신심 전승일 뿐 역사적 근거는 확인되지 않는다. 그럼에도 이 이야기는 스페인어권 마리아 신심의 정점을 이루었고, 오늘도 수많은 순례자가 기둥에 입 맞추려 찾아온다. 천장에는 젊은 고야가 그린 프레스코가 남아 있어 예술사적으로도 귀하다. 개신교 순례자에게는 발현과 기둥 신심을 사실로 단정하지 않고 전승으로 존중하되, 복음이 유럽 서쪽 끝까지 전해지려 한 초대교회의 선교 열정을 되새기는 자리가 된다. 방문 팁: 강 건너편에서 다탑의 실루엣을 감상하고, 내부 고야 천장화와 전망탑을 함께 둘러보길 권한다.
Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar — Aragon (Zaragoza)
On the banks of the Ebro in Zaragoza rises this vast Baroque basilica crowned with many domes and towers, its present building dating to the 17th-18th centuries. Tradition holds that the Apostle James, discouraged while preaching in Spain, was encouraged by the Virgin appearing atop a pillar; this is a Catholic devotional tradition with no verified historical basis. Yet the story became the summit of Marian devotion across the Spanish-speaking world, and pilgrims still come to kiss the pillar. The ceiling preserves a fresco by a young Goya. For Protestant pilgrims, the apparition and pillar devotion are respected as tradition rather than asserted as fact, while the site recalls the early church's zeal to carry the gospel to Europe's far west.
