루르드 성모 대성전

킨타 노르말 구에 있는 이 대성전은 1876년 아리아가다 신부가 시작한 소박한 신심운동에서 출발했다. 인근 지주 알레한드로 비구루가 땅을 기증하면서 1893년 첫 성당이 완공되었는데, 1901년 창간된 잡지 '에코 데 루르드'가 전국적으로 인기를 끌며 순례객이 크게 늘어나자 기존 건물로는 감당이 어려워졌다. 이에 1929년부터 새 성전 공사가 시작되어 1958년에야 지금의 모습을 갖추었다. 비잔틴 양식을 본뜬 거대한 돔과 종탑은 마이푸의 봉헌 성전 다음으로 칠레에서 두 번째로 높은 종교 건축물로 꼽힌다. 1992년 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 이곳을 준대성전으로 선포했다. 설계를 맡은 건축가 에두아르도 코스타발과 안드레스 가라풀릭은 유럽 성지 순례지의 건축을 참고해 대형 돔 안쪽으로 자연광이 은은하게 퍼지도록 신경 썼다. 프랑스 루르드의 발현 신심을 그대로 옮겨온 만큼, 경내에는 루르드 동굴을 재현한 조형물도 마련돼 있어 참배객들이 촛불을 밝히는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 방문 팁: 돔 내부의 규모는 정문보다 측면 출입로에서 올려다볼 때 더 실감 나게 다가온다.
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes — Santiago
This basilica in Quinta Normal grew out of a modest devotion started in 1876 by Padre Jacinto Arriagada. Landowner Alejandro Vigouroux donated the site, and a first church was completed in 1893. After the magazine 'El Eco de Lourdes,' launched in 1901, spread devotion nationwide, pilgrim numbers outgrew the original building, prompting a new church begun in 1929 and only finished in 1958. Its vast dome and tower, in a Byzantine-inspired style, make it the second-tallest religious building in Chile after the Votive Temple of Maipú. Pope John Paul II declared it a Minor Basilica in 1992. Modeled closely on the Lourdes apparition devotion in France, the grounds include a replica grotto where visitors can be seen lighting candles. Visitor tip: the dome's scale is most striking when viewed from the side entrance rather than the main door.
