성 리디아 세례 기념교회
빌립보 성문 밖 강가는 사도행전 16장에서 유럽 최초의 회심 이야기가 펼쳐진 무대다. 안식일에 바울 일행이 기도할 곳을 찾아 강가로 나가자, 그곳에 자주 장사(고급 자색 옷감을 파는 상인) 루디아를 비롯한 여인들이 모여 기도하고 있었다. 두아디라 출신으로 하나님을 경외하던 루디아가 바울의 말씀을 들을 때, 누가는 '주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 따르게 하셨다'고 기록한다(행 16:14). 그녀는 자신과 온 집안이 세례를 받고, 바울 일행을 자기 집으로 청해 대접함으로써 유럽 최초의 가정교회를 열었다. 이 강가 전승지에는 오늘날 루디아의 회심을 기념하는 팔각형의 현대식 기념교회가 세워져, 그녀의 이야기가 화려한 스테인드글라스와 모자이크로 그려져 있다. 교회 옆 야외에는 흐르는 강물을 그대로 끌어들인 세례단이 마련되어, 지금도 순례팀들의 세례식과 세례 갱신 예식이 이곳에서 거행된다. 유럽 대륙의 기독교 전체가 한 여성 상인의 열린 마음에서 시작되었다는 사실은, 복음이 신분과 성별을 가리지 않고 한 가정과 온 대륙을 바꾸어 놓음을 증언한다. 시간이 맞으면 야외 세례단의 세례식을 볼 수 있으며, 흐르는 물가에 앉아 자신의 세례를 되새기며 기도하기 좋은 곳이다.
Baptistery of Saint Lydia — Kavala Regional Unit
The riverbank outside Philippi is the setting of Europe's first recorded conversion in Acts 16. On the Sabbath Paul and his companions went out to the river seeking a place of prayer, and there among the women gathered was Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from Thyatira who worshiped God. As she listened to Paul, Luke writes that 'the Lord opened her heart to respond' (Acts 16:14); she and her whole household were baptized, and by welcoming Paul's party into her home she opened Europe's first house church. Today an octagonal memorial church rich in stained glass and mosaics tells her story at the traditional site, and an open-air baptistery beside it, fed by the flowing river, still hosts baptisms and renewals for pilgrim groups. That the whole of European Christianity began with one merchant woman's opened heart witnesses that the gospel, regardless of rank or gender, transforms a single household and an entire continent.
