배화여고 생활관 (캠벨기념관)

1898년 미국 남감리회 여선교사 조세핀 캠벨(Josephine Campbell)이 세운 배화학당의 유산으로, 종로 필운동 언덕에 남아 있는 옛 선교사 주택(생활관)은 캠벨을 기려 캠벨기념관으로도 불리며 국가등록문화재로 지정되어 있다. 캠벨 선교사는 여성이 배움에서 철저히 소외되던 시대에 조선의 딸들에게 성경과 근대 학문을 함께 가르치며, 복음이 한 사람을 일으켜 세우는 교육 선교의 아름다운 본을 보였다. 그가 심은 씨앗은 오래지 않아 열매를 맺었다. 1920년 3월 1일, 배화 여학생들은 3·1운동 1주년을 맞아 학교에서 만세를 외치다 체포되어 어린 나이에 옥고를 치렀다. 어린 학생들의 그 용기는 신앙 교육이 길러 낸 양심의 열매였고, 믿음과 나라 사랑이 하나로 이어졌음을 증언한다. 붉은 벽돌 몸체에 한식 기와지붕을 얹은 이 건물의 절충 양식에서는, 한국 문화를 존중하며 조심스레 다가가려 한 초기 선교사들의 마음이 읽힌다. 붉은 벽돌과 기와지붕이 만나는 지붕선을 올려다보며, 낯선 땅의 딸들을 사랑한 한 여선교사의 마음을 헤아려 보라.
Baewha Girls' School Campbell Memorial Hall — Seoul Jongno-gu
This former missionary residence on the Pilun-dong hillside in Jongno is a registered cultural heritage of Baewha Girls' School, founded in 1898 by Josephine Campbell of the Southern Methodist mission; it is also called Campbell Memorial Hall in her honor. In an age when women were utterly shut out of learning, Campbell taught Korea's daughters the Bible alongside modern subjects, a beautiful model of education mission that lifts a person up. The seed she planted soon bore fruit: on March 1, 1920, Baewha students staged their own demonstration at the school on the first anniversary of the March First Movement and were arrested, suffering imprisonment despite their youth. Their courage was the fruit of a conscience nurtured by faith-based education, testifying that faith and love of country were one. The red-brick house crowned with a Korean tiled roof reveals the missionaries' respect for the culture they came to serve.
