배론성지

배론성지는 골짜기가 배의 밑바닥을 닮았다 하여 이름을 얻은 옛 교우촌 터로, 한국 천주교의 3대 성지 가운데 하나로 꼽히는 곳이다. 1801년 신유박해 때 황사영은 이곳의 토굴에 숨어, 박해로 무너진 조선 교회의 참상과 신앙의 자유를 청하는 내용을 비단에 깨알같이 적은 이른바 '황사영 백서'를 썼다. 또한 1855년에는 이 골짜기에 조선 최초의 신학교인 성요셉신학당이 세워져 프랑스 선교사들이 한국인 사제 후보들을 가르쳤으니, 박해의 은신처가 다음 세대 사역자를 길러 내는 신학 교육의 요람으로 바뀐 셈이다. 그리고 이곳에는 조선 팔도를 걸어 다니며 흩어진 신자들을 돌보다 과로로 세상을 떠난, 이른바 '땀의 순교자' 최양업 신부의 묘가 자리하고 있다. 고난과 박해의 자리가 도리어 배움과 양육의 요람이 되었다는 사실은, 환난 속에서도 다음 세대를 준비하며 살아 움직인 교회의 생명력을 보여주어 개신교 순례자에게도 울림이 크다. 지금은 황사영이 숨었던 백서 토굴이 재현되어 있고, 초가로 복원된 신학당과 최양업 신부의 묘가 골짜기를 따라 이어진다. 백서 토굴과 신학당 초가, 최양업 신부 묘를 잇는 골짜기 순례 동선을 따라 조용히 걸어보자.
Baeron Holy Site — Chungbuk Jecheon-si
Baeron, named for its boat-hull valley, is one of Korean Catholicism's three great holy sites. During the 1801 persecution, Hwang Sa-yeong hid in a cave here and wrote his famous 'silk letter,' recording in tiny script on silk the devastation of the persecuted Joseon church and pleading for religious freedom. In 1855 St. Joseph's Seminary — Korea's first — was founded in this valley, where French missionaries trained Korean candidates for the priesthood, so that a hideout of persecution became a cradle for raising the next generation of ministers. Here too rests Fr. Choe Yang-eop, the 'martyr of sweat,' who wore himself out walking the whole country to tend scattered believers. That a place of suffering became a cradle of learning speaks to any pilgrim of the church's living resilience, preparing the next generation even under trial. The reenacted cave, the thatched seminary, and Choe's tomb line the valley path today.
