빌립보는 바울이 2차 전도여행 중 마게도냐 사람이 '건너와서 우리를 도우라' 부르는 환상을 본 뒤, 유럽 땅에서 처음으로 복음을 전한 사도행전 16장의 도시다. 이곳에서 바울은 점치는 귀신 들린 여종을 고쳐 주인들의 돈벌이를 끊었다는 이유로 실라와 함께 매를 맞고 깊은 옥에 갇혔다. 그런데 두 사람이 한밤중에 기도하며 하나님을 찬송하자 큰 지진이 나 옥문이 열렸고, 죄수들이 도망치지 않은 것을 본 간수는 두려워 떨며 '내가 어떻게 하여야 구원을 받으리이까' 물었다. '주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 받으리라'는 대답에 간수와 온 가족이 그 밤에 세례를 받았다. 로마의 퇴역 군인들이 정착한 식민도시였던 이곳에는 동서를 잇는 대로 비아 에그나티아, 아고라(광장), 바울이 갇혔다고 전해지는 감옥 터, 그리고 초기 그리스도교의 웅장한 바실리카 교회 유적들이 남아 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정되었다. 훗날 바울이 옥중에서 이 교회에 보낸 빌립보서는 '항상 기뻐하라'는 기쁨의 편지가 되었으니, 그 기쁨의 뿌리가 바로 이 도시의 밤에 있었다. 바울이 실제로 걸었을 비아 에그나티아의 포장돌과 감옥 전승지를 눈여겨보라.
Archaeological Site of Philippi — Kavala Regional Unit
Philippi is the city of Acts 16 where Paul, after seeing a vision of a Macedonian pleading 'come over and help us,' first preached the gospel on European soil. Here he and Silas were beaten and thrown into an inner prison for freeing a slave girl from a fortune-telling spirit and cutting off her owners' profit. When at midnight they prayed and sang hymns, a great earthquake shook the prison and the doors flew open; seeing the prisoners had not fled, the terrified jailer asked, 'What must I do to be saved?' — and at the words 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household,' he and all his family were baptized that night. This Roman colony of army veterans preserves the Via Egnatia, the forum, the traditional prison of Paul, and the ruins of grand early basilicas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The joyful letter to the Philippians, urging 'rejoice always,' was later written from prison — its joy rooted in this city's night.
