안동교회

안동교회는 1909년 서울 북촌의 양반 마을 한복판에 세워진 장로교회로, 유학적 교양을 지닌 양반 지식인들이 스스로 복음을 받아들이고 설립을 주도했다는 점에서 각별하다. 대개 초기 교회가 선교사의 전도로 시작된 것과 달리, 이 교회는 김창제를 비롯한 한국인들이 자발적으로 뜻을 모아 세웠다. 평생 유교적 학문과 자존심 속에 살아온 양반들이 예수 그리스도 앞에 무릎을 꿇었다는 사실은, 복음이 신분과 학문의 자존심마저 겸손히 내려놓게 하는 능력임을 보여 준다. 교회 이름은 이 일대의 옛 지명인 '안동'에서 왔으며, 경북 안동과는 다른 서울 종로의 교회다. 이후 한 세기가 넘도록 같은 자리를 지키며 북촌 지역 신앙과 교육의 한 축을 이루어 왔고, 여러 인재를 길러 냈다. 고즈넉한 한옥 골목들 사이에 단정히 자리한 석조 예배당의 대비가 인상적이니, 북촌 산책길에 잠시 들러 초기 서울 기독교의 숨결을 느껴 보라.
Andong Presbyterian Church — Seoul Jongno-gu
Andong Presbyterian Church was founded in 1909 in the heart of Bukchon's aristocratic quarter in Seoul, and is distinctive because yangban scholars steeped in Confucian learning embraced the gospel and led its founding themselves. Unlike most early churches begun through missionary evangelism, this one was raised by Koreans such as Kim Chang-je who gathered of their own will. That yangban who had lived their whole lives in Confucian scholarship and pride knelt before Jesus Christ shows the gospel's power to humble even the pride of rank and learning. The church takes its name from the old local place-name 'Andong,' and is a Jongno church distinct from Andong in Gyeongbuk. For over a century it has kept its place as a pillar of faith and education in Bukchon, raising up many able people. The composed stone sanctuary set among quiet hanok alleys makes a striking stop on any walk through the neighborhood.
