Aldersgate Flame — City of London
The Aldersgate Flame commemorates the evening of 24 May 1738, when John Wesley, listening to Luther's preface to Romans at a society meeting on Aldersgate Street at about a quarter to nine, felt his heart 'strangely warmed' and knew that he trusted 'Christ, Christ alone, for salvation.' An exemplary Oxford churchman and failed missionary to Georgia, Wesley had been haunted by lack of assurance until Moravians singing calmly through an Atlantic storm, and Peter Böhler's counsel to 'preach faith till you have it,' led him to that meeting; his brother Charles had come to the same assurance three days earlier. The conversion turned a diligent but defeated clergyman into the leader of a revival that shook Britain and the world, and it is remembered as a watershed of Protestant history. The flame-shaped bronze monument, erected in 1981, bears the journal entry in Wesley's own words—worth reading slowly on site.
