서머나 아고라(이즈미르)

계시록 일곱 교회 중 '네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 관을 네게 주리라'(계 2:10)는 말씀을 받은 서머나, 오늘의 이즈미르 도심에 남은 고대 아고라 유적이다. 서머나 교회는 일곱 교회 가운데 책망 없이 위로만 받은 두 교회 중 하나로, '네 환난과 궁핍을 알거니와 실상은 네가 부요한 자니라'(계 2:9)는 말씀을 들었다. 서기 178년 대지진 후 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스 황제의 지원으로 재건된 아고라의 주랑 기둥들과 아치형 지하 회랑, 수로가 현대 도시 한복판에 놀랍도록 보존되어 있다. 이 도시는 사도 요한의 제자였던 감독 폴리캅의 순교지로 전해지는데, 그는 서기 155년경 원형경기장에서 그리스도를 저주하면 살려 주겠다는 총독의 회유에 '86년간 그분을 섬겼으나 그분은 한 번도 나를 저버리지 않으셨다. 나를 구원하신 나의 왕을 어찌 모독하겠는가'라고 답하고 화형당했다. 그의 순교 기록은 신약 이후 최초의 순교 문서로 남아 초대교회 신앙의 증언이 되었다. 가난과 환난 중에도 실상은 부요했던 서머나의 신앙은 순교의 피 위에 선 한국 교회 순례자에게 남다른 울림을 주며, 이즈미르가 오늘까지 번영하는 도시로 남은 것을 '생명의 관' 약속과 연결해 묵상하는 이들도 많다. 지하 회랑의 아치와 벽에 남은 고대 낙서들, 파우스티나 문을 눈여겨보라.

Izmir is ancient Smyrna, the church told 'be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown' (Revelation 2:10) — one of only two of the seven churches to receive no rebuke, poor in the world's eyes yet 'rich' in Christ's. The agora, rebuilt with Marcus Aurelius' help after the earthquake of 178 AD, survives in the heart of the modern city with its colonnades, vaulted basement galleries, and water channels. Here tradition places the martyrdom of Polycarp around 155 AD, the aged disciple of John who answered the proconsul, 'Eighty-six years I have served him, and he never did me wrong; how can I blaspheme my King who saved me?' — the account of his death is the earliest martyrdom narrative after the New Testament.
