애양원역사박물관
애양원역사박물관은 옛 애양병원 건물에 마련된 전시관으로, 1909년 시작된 애양원 공동체의 한 세기를 증언한다. 그 출발은 미국 남장로교 의료선교사 포사이드가 길가에 쓰러진 한센인 여성을 자기 말에 태우고 자신은 걸어서 데려온 사건이었다. 이 일에 감동한 이들이 한센인 돌봄에 나섰고, 윌슨 선교사의 헌신 속에 광주에서 시작된 공동체는 1928년 여수 신풍반도로 옮겨 애양원으로 자라났다. 모두가 피하던 병자들을 품은 이 의료선교는 선한 사마리아인 비유를 그대로 살아낸 역사였다. 박물관에는 초기 진료 기구와 수술 도구, 사진과 문서들이 전시되어 치유 선교의 현장을 생생히 전하며, 손양원 목사의 사랑과 순교 이야기도 함께 만날 수 있다. 애양원은 지금도 병원과 복지시설로 이어져 몸과 영혼을 함께 돌보는 사명을 계속하고 있다. 박물관을 나서면 애양원교회와 손양원 목사 유적까지 걸어서 순례할 수 있으니 넉넉히 시간을 두고 머물러 보라.
Aeyangwon History Museum — Jeonnam Yeosu-si
Housed in the old Aeyangwon hospital building, this museum tells a century of history that began in 1909, when medical missionary Wiley Forsythe set a leprosy-stricken woman on his own horse and walked beside her to safety. Moved by that Good Samaritan act, missionaries like Robert Wilson built a community of care that moved from Gwangju to Yeosu's Sinpung peninsula in 1928 and grew into Aeyangwon. Early medical instruments, photographs, and documents bring the healing mission vividly close, alongside the love and martyrdom of pastor Son Yang-won. The community still serves today as a hospital and welfare institution, and the church and Son's memorial sites are within walking distance.
